Student Life

The students of Sunnyside come together in many ways.

Picture
Whether our students are in the cafetorium, on the blacktop, in the drop-off zone, or when working together in teams or on projects, our school learning environment fosters a safe, respectful and responsible atmosphere.

School Climate

The foundation of our school behavior policy is that all members of the community follow Three Big Rules: Be safe, Be respectful, Be responsible. Every student, staff member and visitor should be treated with dignity and respect. With compassion, we believe that follow-through with clear, fair and consistent consequences work to restore relationships harmed by misbehavior and are needed to ensure learning empathy and that students embrace their place in our community. Our full Climate & Discipline Policy—including our work with Restorative Practices, our non-discrimination policy, and Balanced Scorecard/Site Plan—is available by request from the office.
To foster a safe, welcoming environment Sunnyside has the following three big rules:

Lunch & Recess

All Sunnyside students eat lunch with their grade in the cafeteria and are outside for recess as two grade-levels (K and 1, 2 and 3, 4 and 5).
Students will be able to choose free meals this year, fresh food prepared by Oakland’s Revolution Foods. (Free breakfast is also provided from 9:15am to 9:25am in the cafeteria.)

How to Apply for Free or Reduced Lunch Benefits

Fill out the multi-purpose form you receive at the beginning of the year, pick one up in the office, or apply online at https://www.schoolcafe.com/. Every family should fill out an application, whether you want school lunch or not. Our school funding from SFUSD depends on the information provided in these forms.

Drop Zone

We are located on a San Francisco Slow Street.
Please use patience when approaching our block.

Picture
Starting at 9:15am, you can park (legally, please!) and walk your children into school, or drop them off at the drop zone on Hearst Avenue, staffed by parent volunteers and a teacher. It is located on the south side of Hearst Avenue between Foerster and Edna Streets, at the entrance to the schoolyard. Rules for conduct in the drop zone are regularly communicated to parents.

To pick your child up after school, please park and walk to the yard through the gate on Hearst Avenue. Older students (4th and 5th) can sign themselves out if a parent arranges in advance with their teacher.

Sports

Sunnyside parents and volunteers have organized several school teams, particularly in soccer, as part of the YMCA League and SF Vikings League. Parents setting up school or class teams may communicate by ParentSquare to invite players.

The Ray

Sunnyside is the only elementary school in the district to produce its own literary journal. It consists of art, poetry and prose by Sunnyside students at all grade levels.

Thanks to a grant from the Glen Park Association for the 2023 publication of The Ray, we hope to have our students also experience showcasing their artwork and spoken word in local community spaces for all to enjoy.
